Luke
1And it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, so that the whole world would be enrolled2This was the first enrollment; it was made by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius3And all went to be declared, each one to his own city4Then Joseph also ascended from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David5in order to be declared, with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child6Then it happened that, while they were there, the days were completed, so that she would give birth7And she brought forth her firstborn son. And she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn8And there were shepherds in the same region, being vigilant and keeping watch in the night over their flock9And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near them, and the brightness of God shone around them, and they were struck with a great fear10And the Angel said to them: "Do not be afraid. For, behold, I proclaim to you a great joy, which will be for all the people11For today a Saviour has been born for you in the city of David: he is Christ the Lord12And this will be a sign for you: you will find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.13And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the celestial army, praising God and saying14"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.15And it happened that, when the Angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us cross over to Bethlehem and see this word, which has happened, which the Lord has revealed to us.16And they went quickly. And they found Mary and Joseph; and the infant was lying in a manger17Then, upon seeing this, they understood the word that had been spoken to them about this boy18And all who heard it were amazed by this, and by those things which were told to them by the shepherds19But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told to them21And after eight days were ended, so that the boy would be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, just as he was called by the Angel before he was conceived in the womb22And after the days of her purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem, in order to present him to the Lord23just as it is written in the law of the Lord, "For every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,24and in order to offer a sacrifice, according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.25And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and God-fearing, awaiting the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was with him26And he had received an answer from the Holy Spirit: that he would not see his own death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord27And he went with the Spirit to the temple. And when the child Jesus was brought in by his parents, in order to act on his behalf according to the custom of the law28he also took him up, into his arms, and he blessed God and said29"Now you may dismiss your servant in peace, O Lord, according to your word30For my eyes have seen your salvation31which you have prepared before the face of all peoples32the light of revelation to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.33And his father and mother were wondering over these things, which were spoken about him34And Simeon blessed them, and he said to his mother Mary: "Behold, this one has been set for the ruin and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and as a sign which will be contradicted35And a sword will pass through your own soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.36And there was a prophetess, Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in years, and she had lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity37And then she was a widow, even to her eighty-fourth year. And without departing from the temple, she was a servant to fasting and prayer, night and day38And entering at the same hour, she confessed to the Lord. And she spoke about him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Israel39And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their city, Nazareth40Now the child grew, and he was strengthened with the fullness of wisdom. And the grace of God was in him41And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the time of the solemnity of Passover42And when he had become twelve years old, they ascended to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast day43And having completed the days, when they returned, the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And his parents did not realize this44But, supposing that he was in the company, they went a day’s journey, seeking him among their relatives and acquaintances45And not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him46And it happened that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, listening to them and questioning them47But all who listened to him were astonished over his prudence and his responses48And upon seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: "Son, why have you acted this way toward us? Behold, your father and I were seeking you in sorrow.49And he said to them: "How is it that you were seeking me? For did you not know that it is necessary for me to be in these things which are of my Father?50And they did not understand the word that he spoke to them51And he descended with them and went to Nazareth. And he was subordinate to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart52And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and in age, and in grace, with God and men
1Then, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being procurator of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene2under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas: the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness3And he went into the entire region of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins4just as it has been written in the book of the sermons of the prophet Isaiah: "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths5Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low. And what is crooked shall be made straight. And the rough paths shall be made into level ways6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.7Therefore, he said to the crowd that went out in order to be baptized by him: "You progeny of vipers! Who told you to flee from the approaching wrath8So then, produce fruits worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones9For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.10And the crowed was questioning him, saying, "What then should we do?11But in response, he said to them: "Whoever has two coats, let him give to those who do not have. And whoever has food, let him act similarly.12Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?13But he said to them, "You should do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.14Then the soldiers also questioned him, saying, "And what should we do?" And he said to them: "You should strike no one, and you should not make false accusations. And be content with your pay.15Now all were thinking about John in their hearts, and the people were supposing that perhaps he might be the Christ16John responded by saying to everyone: "Indeed, I baptize you with water. But there will arrive one stronger than me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and with fire17His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will purify his threshing floor. And he will gather the wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.18Indeed, he also proclaimed many other things, exhorting the people19But Herod the tetrarch, when he was corrected by him concerning Herodias, his brother’s wife, and concerning all the evils that Herod had done20added this also, above all else: that he confined John to prison21Now it happened that, when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized; and as he was praying, heaven was opened22And the Holy Spirit, in a corporal appearance like a dove, descended upon him. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my beloved Son. In you, I am well pleased.23And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old, being (as it was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was of Heli, who was of Matthat24who was of Levi, who was of Melchi, who was of Jannai, who was of Joseph25who was of Mattathias, who was of Amos, who was of Nahum, who was of Esli, who was of Naggai26who was of Maath, who was of Mattathias, who was of Semein, who was of Josech, who was of Joda27who was of Joanan, who was of Rhesa, who was of Zerubbabel, who was of Shealtiel, who was of Neri28who was of Melchi, who was of Addi, who was of Cosam, who was of Elmadam, who was of Er29who was of Joshua, who was of Eliezer, who was of Jorim, who was of Matthat, who was of Levi30who was of Simeon, who was of Judah, who was of Joseph, who was of Jonam, who was of Eliakim31who was of Melea, who was of Menna, who was of Mattatha, who was of Nathan, who was of David32who was of Jesse, who was of Obed, who was of Boaz, who was of Salmon, who was of Nahshon33who was of Amminadab, who was of Aram, who was of Hezron, who was of Perez, who was of Judah34who was of Jacob, who was of Isaac, who was of Abraham, who was of Terah, who was of Nahor35who was of Serug, who was of Reu, who was of Peleg, who was of Eber, who was of Shelah36who was of Cainan, who was of Arphaxad, who was of Shem, who was of Noah, who was of Lamech37who was of Methuselah, who was of Enoch, who was of Jared, who was of Mahalalel, who was of Cainan38who was of Enos, who was of Seth, who was of Adam, who was of God
