2 Corinthians
18But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.20For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.21Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;22Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
Matthew
13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Sermon
In today's readings, we are reminded of the profound role that faith and action play in our lives as followers of Christ. The first reading from 2 Corinthians emphasizes God's unwavering faithfulness and the fulfillment of His promises through Jesus Christ. Paul reassures the Corinthian community that despite any uncertainties, God's Word is reliable and steadfast. This reassurance is a testament to the trustworthiness of God, who is the source of all promises and their fulfillment in Christ.
In the Gospel, Jesus uses vivid metaphors to illustrate the impact believers should have in the world. He describes us as "salt of the earth" and "light of the world," highlighting the necessity of our active engagement in society. Just as salt enhances flavor and light illuminates darkness, our faith should positively influence those around us. Jesus warns against complacency, urging us not to hide our faith but to let it shine for all to see, so that others may witness our good works and glorify God.
These readings call us to reflect on our role as disciples in the world. Trusting in God's faithfulness, we are empowered to live out our faith boldly. We are challenged to be proactive in making a difference, whether through acts of kindness, standing up for justice, or simply being a supportive presence in someone's life. As we go about our daily lives, let us consider how we can embody the qualities of salt and light, trusting that our efforts, however small, can have a meaningful impact. May we strive to live in such a way that our faith is not only a personal comfort but also a source of inspiration and hope for others.
