Deuteronomy
The book of Deuteronomy is a collection of sermons and instructions given by Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. Moses recounts the Israelites' journey from Horeb to Kadesh-barnea, and reminds them of God's covenant and commandments. He instructs them to love and obey God, to destroy the nations they will dispossess, and to follow God's statutes and rules. Moses also warns the Israelites against idolatry, false prophets, and disobedience, and reminds them of God's power and love in delivering them from Egypt. He commissions Joshua as the new leader and writes a song as a witness against the Israelites, who will eventually turn to other gods and break their covenant. The book concludes with Moses' blessing of the tribes, his death on Mount Nebo, and the transition of leadership to Joshua.
